The water pump bearing will easily disintegrate and can cause massive damage to the engine. However, this fault can be easily fixed by installing an additional ground wire. The updated E46 sedan (from 9/01 to 3/05 production) wiring harness has a design defect with grounding wires for the rear lighting that are too small and are made of poor quality materials, thus leading to wiring harness failure due to overheating. This is extremely common on this model and costs around $700 per door, including labor.Īnother problematic part is the tail lamp wiring. They are known to make a clicking noise as they go up or down which is a sign that the regulator is about to fail. One of the known issues with the E46 models are the window regulators. Overall, the engine, transmission, differential and interior materials are bullet proof so you'll have to be careful in other areas. I tried that and it did improve things somewhat.
